Thunder Bay Aura Amethyst with Pyrite

This gorgeous specimen features iridescent veins of amethyst crystal running through a dark granite bespeckled with pyrite. And yes, we said iridescent! Naturally occurring iridescent amethyst is rare but sometimes found at Blue Point Mine, where we chose source our Thunder Bay amethysts. This can happen either when an extremely fine layer of metallic mineral overlays the crystal (similar to how "aura quartz" is made artificially), in which case it is called "natural aura," or it can be due microscopic ridges in the structure of the crystal, in which case it is called "iris quartz" or, in this case, "iris amethyst." While we are not experts, we think this one may be a case of natural aura amethyst. Either way, it is a beautiful and subtle natural phenomenon. We have tried our best to photograph the effect, but it is best seen in person.
