Our purple Crocus flowers are homegrown Spring Crocus (Crocus vernus). It is the second earliest of the crocus species to flower, after its cousin Crocus flavus. It originates from the Alps, Balkans, and Pyrenees. It has become naturalized in many other areas but is more likely to appear where purposefully planted in gardens.
In Greco-Roman myth, Crocus was a mortal youth who was changed into the Saffron Crocus specifically. There are two different stories about how this happened, though. In one, Crocus was in a love affair with the nymph Smilax, which somehow ended unhappily and resulted in their transformation into namesake plants. In the other, Crocus was a companion of Hermes and was accidentally killed by Hermes in a game of discuss, when he stood up and was smashed in the head. His blood spilled and from it bloomed Saffron Crocus, which is a cousin to our Spring Crocus.
The Crocus is a sacred flower of Hermes. Additionally, Crocus appears in the Bouquet of Persephone (which she was gathering when "kidnapped" by Hades) and in the Couch of Hera (the bed of flowers she made love to Zeus on). Aphrodite has also been connected to Crocus, her clothes dyed by Saffron threads while Crocus appears in her flower crown.
Because of its connection to Spring, the Spring Crocus is also connected to Imbolc, Ostara, and Easter, and thus also to Brigid and Eostre as well as the Wiccan Goddess in her "Maiden state." In the language of flowers, Spring Crocus represents "youthful gladness." In the doctrine of signatures, the corm of the crocus is connected to the head. Additionally, Spring Crocus is associated with Fertility, Joy, Love, Romance, and Youthful vitality. It is strongly connected to the planet Venus and the signs of Scorpio and Pisces.
Please keep in mind that dried flowers are delicate. Each of these bags had placed within three dried blossoms, but over time, they do tend to crumble. There is no way for us to package these in a way that prevents this, unfortunately. Our inventory exists within our booth space at the 400 Market in Innisfil, Ontario, which is only open on weekends. This may cause a small delay in shipping. All our prices are inclusive of all applicable sales taxes within Canada & Ontario.
