Hollyhock flowers

Hollyhock is said to be popular with flower fairies; burning an incense of equal parts hollyhock and rosemary should help attract them. Its name means "holy mallow," and it was once connected St. Cuthbert and falsely believed to originate from the Holy Land. It is connected to abundance, ambition, creation, fertility, and prosperity. It is also connected by some with the Waning Moon, with Venus, and with Lushnasadh/Lammas. Dark-coloured Hollyhocks are connected by some with Pluto.

Garden varieties of Hollyhock primarily originates from China, though some varieties are native to other parts of Asia and Europe. Historically, it was eaten cooked when more palatable greens were not available, and the flowers were used medicinally as a demulcent, diuretic, and emollient. The flower is thought particularly helpful for chest complaints.

Hollyhocks, which have similar medicinal propreties to Mallows, were once thought to be Mallows themselves, given the nomenclature of Althaea rosea. Today, they are known to be less closely related (though still sharing the family of Malvaceae). Hollyhocks are now recognized to be many different species in the genus Alcea.

The Hollyhocks we have available are homegrown without any pesticides in a memorial butterfly garden. They are picked just before they begin to fade, to give butterflies and bees the maximum amount of time to feed on the nectar. They are obviously in extremely limited supply. Currently we only have light pink hollyhock flowers available, in packages of three flowers for $2. Though they are dried and packaged whole, they are fragile and may crumble before they get to you.

Our herbs are not packaged in a commercial kitchen, and, as such, are not fit for human consumption in accordance with Health Canada regulations.
