All About Amazonite

General

Amazonite, also called Amazon Stone, is a type of alkali-feldspar rich in potassium (called microcline), which happens to get called “amazonite” once inclusions of lead, rubidium, thallium, and iron reach certain levels to give it its characteristic bright blue-green appearance. It shares the same chemical formulation as moonstone, but with a different crystal habit. It crystallizes as short, prismatic crystals; tabular crystals; or masses.

The source of amazonite's colour was a mystery for many years. Initially thought to probably be from copper, a study from 1985 was the first to suggest that the unique blue-green shade may come from lead and water quantities in the feldspar. Further research indicates that colours may be linked to varying levels of lead, rubidium, and thallium. Some specimens even contain high levels of lead monoxide (PbO), exceeding 1%. Additionally, a 2010 study highlighted the contribution of divalent iron to the green colour.

While Amazonite has been found in archaeological finds in the regions of Egypt and Mesopotamia, dating back well over 3,000 years, it appears that in that time it was never recognized as a distinct mineral of its own, as there is no lasting reference to it as such. It would not be so recognized until the 1700s C.E. when a blue-green stone was found by the Amazon river and named “Amazonite.” However, we have no indication if this is actually the same stone as modern Amazonite, which has not yet been rediscovered in that area.

Toxicity

In a study conducted in 2021 by the German Institut für Edelsteinprüfung (EPI), it was discovered that the leakage of lead from an 11 g Amazonite sample into an acidic solution mimicking saliva surpassed the European Union standard DIN EN 71-3:2013 by five times. The experiment was designed to replicate a scenario where a child ingests Amazonite.

Locations

At one point, Amazonite was primarily sourced from the Miass region in Russia but is now found worldwide, including in countries like Mongolia, China, Brazil, South Africa, the US, Australia, Libya, and Sweden. Amazonite is known to leach toxic amounts of lead if licked or swallowed.

Spiritual & Witchcraft Uses

Judy Hall connects Amazonite to the Amazons, to whom she attributes warrior status, a balance of “masculine” and “feminine” energies, sisterhood, friendship, courage, and loyalty. She suggests using the the stone to connect to the powers of fortitude, friendship, and strength, as well as for integrating masculine & feminine energies and for seeing both sides of a problem. According to Yulia Van Doren, it encourages speaking one’s inner truth as well as speaking truth in general. Connecting it to the Amazon River, she attributes the qualities of adventure, flow, and strength.

Feldspars are generally able to help one detach from old ways of doing things and to discover new, exciting, uncoventional patterns. Amazonite in particular is known for clarity and balancing one’s own conflicting personality traits or ideas, transforming negative emotional patterns and challenging deep-seated beliefs and fostering innovative thinking. It can help filter information being absorbed into the mind and check it against one’s own intuition. With these abilities utilized, Amazon is thus able to not only manifest but to also help the user retain Universal Love.

“It provides for support in issues of self- awareness and self-love, for with realization of love one can become united with all aspects of the world.” (Melody, Love Is in the Earth - A Kaleidoscope of Crystals Update)

Amazonite offers support to those struggling with accepting infertility or who have “empty nests” by directing their nurturing and creative energies elsewhere. For those seeking the courage to progress in life and overcome codependency, Amazonite promotes self-reliance while attracting supportive companions. Amazonite is also said to help soothe worry and fear caused by emotional trauma. It can dispel negativity and aggravation.

Additionally, it can aid as a truth-telling talisman for anyone who communicates for a living, and it can also aid in inspiration. For this reason, it can also be particularly helpful in inspiring social media posts, especially that one feels anxious about posting.

The vibrant turquoise-coloured Amazonite boasts a more refined energetic vibration compared to its green counterpart. It serves as a potent shield while delving into higher states of awareness, releasing harmful karmic ties associated with the upper chakras, liberating your spiritual energies.

To cultivate the strength of friendship, gift your friends Amazonite stones. Set aside a specific time to connect and think of each other while holding these precious stones.

According to Scott Cunningham, it is worn by gamblers to ensure success or by others who are taking a risk in their journey for success. He also claims that Amazonite and Aventurine make good substitutes for each other. Melody suggests using feldspars to find that which has been misplaced, or to help interpret messages (both internal and external).

Melody additionally associates it with hedge-riding, though she doesn’t word it that way. According to her, “This mineral also helps one to simultaneously attune to both the spiritual dimension and the province of chaos in order to facilitate the complete traversing of all boundaries; this aspect of the energy of Amazonite helps one to access the harmonious centre within the kingdom of perfection and to integrate and synthesize the duality.”

Van Doren advises gifting Amazonite for birthdays, graduation, new jobs.

Water Cleansing

Amazonite can be cleansed with water or used indirectly for elixir. It should not spend a significant amount of time in water, and should not be exposed to water containing salts, chlorine, or other harsh chemicals. Xanna Eve Chown & Emily Anderson advise placing it in a bowl of water infused with mint to not only cleanse it but recharge it.

Divinatory Meaning

Amazonite can be used in a bundle of crystals for crystal divination! Its suggested meanings are:

  • Taking charge
  • Taking initiative
  • Standing up for what is right

Crystal Healing

According to Melody, Amazonite is generally balancing and preventative, while according to Hall, the stone’s primary use is to shield the body from the effects of  “electromagnetic frequencies” (including Wi-Fi), geopathic stress, and “subtle radiation,” which she claims depletes the immune systems in sensitive people. Hall recommends placing Amazonite between one’s self and the thing being shielded from or adhering Amazonite to the back of one’s cell phone.

It is thought to aligns the physical, etheric, and astral bodies. It soothes all chakras. It is especially healing & energizing for the heart centre and throat chakras. Opening the heart & throat chakras enables loving communication as well as communication *about* love & emotions. It can also open the 3rd eye for intuition.

Amazonite is said to be soothing to the brain and nervous system. It may relieve muscle spasm, and an Amazonite massage wand is probably a great idea for both easing stress and relaxing muscles after exercise.

Hall claims that Amazonite resonates with calcium and thus can be used to regulate calcium uptake in the body and to balance metabolic deficiencies that create calcium deficiency, calcium deposits, osteoporosis, and tooth decay.
