Carnelian and Red Agate Tumbles

Carnelian and Red Agate Tumbles

Our tumbled carnelian pieces are between 7/8'' to 1 1/4' in size. The photo is of some example products, and the piece you receive may vary in size and colour. These pieces range from pink carnelian to very dark red agate.

Carnelian (red agate) and sard are a variety of chalcedony which gain their brown-red colour from inclusions of iron oxide, with sard being the harder of the two, and there is a great variety in coloration. As a form of chalcedony, carnelian is thus composed of fine intergrowths of quartz and its polymorph moganite. Because of this, carnelian has no natural cleavage and fractures in uneven, conchoidal splinters.

Carnelian jewelry has been found dating back as far as the 5th century BCE. Carnelian was favoured by Romans for signet and seal rings, especially since hot wax cannot adhere to the stone. It has been popular for jewelry of all kinds throughout South Asia, Southern Europe, North Africa, and the Mediterranean region. It gains the name "carnelian" from the cornel cherry which it resembles.
