Crocus is often called “the first flower of spring,” though here in Ontario, you might have noticed the Hepatica first. Crocus is associated with spring, youthfulness, cheer, and sobriety. There is varying folklore about a young Spartan named Krokus who was in love with the nymph Smilax and heartbroken to not have his love returned. In another tale, Krokus was loved by Hermes who killed him accidentally in a sporting event. In both versions, Krokus becomes the crocus.
