Our sage and mugwort bundles are rarely available, so get them why you can. We use garden sage, a variety not endangered and not tied to closed cultural practices. We grow our mugwort in our garden without the use of any pesticides. We then bind the fresh herbs with an undyed cotton cord and hang them to dry.
Sometimes, the herbs shrink as they dry and the cotton cord may become loose. If slack enough, we may re-tie the bundle, but if not too slack, we may let it be. When burning the herb bundles, remember that you want smoke, not fire. Flames should be blown out or smothered. Many people prefer to simply hang the bundle where they would like it to take effect instead of burning it.
Sage is considered a very strong cleanser and an "energetic bleach." It is common practice to bind it with other herbs to add back in good energy. Mugwort adds a protective element to the energy of the bundle.
