The obsidian slab that we sell here is approximately 6cm x 4.75cm x 1cm (2.5" x 2" x .5"). Though it can obviously be used for any purpose we wanted to offer it as an affordably sized divination mirror in authentic obsidian rather than the cheaper black-painted glass, though obviously either works fine.

This item ships directly from our store in Newmarket, Ontario.

Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass which is both very hard and so brittle that it fractures into extremely sharp pieces ideal for precision cutting tools. It is at least 70% silicone dioxide colored darkly by iron and magnesium. Some samples may include bubbles or sheens, due to the various ways the glass is formed. When polished, obsidian creates a reflective mirror surface and is the earliest form of mirror.

It was named by the Romans for the explorer Obsius, who came across it in Ethiopia. However, the oldest archaeological sample of an obsidian tool dates to 700,000 BCE, and it was very valuable as a Stone Age tool because of how sharp it was. There are samples of obsidian tools from across the world due to its importance.

Obsidian should not be made to encounter water, or it may degrade.

Possible correspondences: cutting, fire, lava, mirror, precision, reflection, ubiquity, volcano.

Scrying is a method of divination by which one gazes into an object (usually reflective or translucent, such as crystals, balls, water, glass, mirrors, fire, and smoke) with the hope of seeing an image or scene from which to divine meaning. In some cases, the supposed images are quite literal, such as seeing your future husband's profile, face, or eyes or seeing a ghost or seeing what you'll look like when you're old, etc. In other cases, it may be figurative, such as seeing shapes, flames, a change of colors in the object, and so on which are then further interpreted. There are many different methods of scrying, including entering a trance state, focusing intensely or losing focus, interacting with the object (such as introducing smoke to a mirror, fog to glass, or wax to water), or using psychoactives*. Sometimes there are rituals involved, and sometimes one just sits down and starts looking. There are an infinite variety methods, and we look forward to hearing how you use your scrying tools!
