The spongey dessert known as "marshmallows" are, in fact, named for the plant. All parts of the plant, but especially the roots, have mucilaginous qualities (meaning that it can act as a thickener or "glue"), and it was these qualities that originally helped create the spongey desert which is now made with cornstarch and gelatin. However, it is Althaea officinalis's mucilaginous quality that makes it extremely well-suited for soothing sore throats, having been used for such since the days of Ancient Egypt. It additionally has a wide range of medicinal uses toward minor ailments.
