Mentha piperita, or peppermint, grows in just about any rich, wet soil, especially in swampy areas such as are common in Louisiana and parts of Japan, both of which have large peppermint farms. Peppermint has been cultivated since the time of ancient Egypt and was highly prized among ancient Greeks and Romans, who were known to adorn themselves and their tables with it. However, it did not appear in west European pharmacopoeias until the 1700, and it took some time for west Europeans to recognize it as a different species from other mints. Japan, meanwhile, has been isolating menthol crystals for over 200 years.

Peppermint is highly prized for its abundance of the volatile oil which gives it its characteristic smell, and it also has one of the highest menthol contents among the various mint species - surpassed only by pennyroyal. The flavor an medicinal properties of peppermint are both attributed to constituents which dissolve in alcohol.

Peppermint is anti-emetic, aromatic, carminative, nervine, stimulating, stomachic, and soothing to abdominal cramps. It is also used to hide unpalatable flavors. Peppermint tea can allay illness when ingested at the earliest signs. While it does seem cool on the skin, it is actually warming and can cause perspiration, though not to a significant amount. Peppermint presents no danger of overdose.
